Synopsis
The story is set in the 1990s. Secondary school student, Jiaming (Daren Tan) is coping with both his O-level examinations and his parents' bar business, the Dream Boat. He and his mates Cao Gen, Hao Ban and Xiao Pang are studying. When a dare to get the numbers of two nearby girls, Jayley and Hayley Woo, goes awry, the boys run away. Jiaming bumps into the twins' friend, May, while doing so, consequently dropping his Xinyao booklet.
After receiving their O-Level results, Jiaming decides to drop school while the rest of the boys move on. Coincidentally, they are placed in the same Junior College as the three girls they had met earlier. On the first day of school, the boys start a short-lived pornographic magazines business and are suspended from school for a month's time. Meanwhile, Jiaming visits the junior college to hang out with his friends and is attracted by a familiar music tune into an empty school assembly hall. There, he discovers May playing the song on the piano from the Xinyao book that he dropped earlier. He confronts her to repossess his book but is interrupted by three school bullies, whose leader said that May was his. Jiaming leaves the scene after a conflict with the bullies. Eventually, he meets up with his three friends and learns of their suspension.
The boys become aware of Xinyao singing contest with a winner's purse of $5000. Jiaming suggests that they join the contest and they form a band. After their own auditions, the boys bump into the girls, who have tried their luck in the contest too but lost out because of technical difficulties. They decide to work together with the boys, forming a collaborative band. Subsequently, they are asked to perform at and advertise the Dream Boat.
During a gig later on, Jiaming is hounded by a pack of bullies for his close relationship with May. They are eventually chased away and the performance goes on as per normal, until May unexpectedly collapses because of a heart defect. May's mother bans her from seeing Jiaming after the incident but the warning is ignored and their relationship becomes stronger. They get romantically involved, as do the other guys and ladies. All is well until May announces that she is leaving for the United States.
May skips school during her birthday and is joined by the boys. Upon realising her daughter's truancy, May's mother detains her in the house and confronts Jiaming, harshly warning him to stop seeing May.
