  • Synopsis
  • Unable to endure her stepmother after father's death, nineteen yar old Songlian decides to leave college and accept an offer of marriage to the old master of the powerful Chen Chan, Chen Zuoqian, Chen at fifty, already has three wives. Each wife is given her own house and courtyard within the family compound. Each evening a red lantern is lit in front of the door of the wife with whom the master chooses to sleep. Songlian soon finds life in the Chen mansion revoles mainly around the rivalries between the wives.
